About Cathy Hudgins

Government Service:

Supervisor Catherine “Cathy” Hudgins was elected to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to represent the Hunter Mill District in November 1999 and was re-elected in November 2003. Currently she is the Chairman of the Board's Human Services and the Housing and Community Development Committees, Vice-Chair of Information Technology and Transportation Committees and is a member of the Economic Advisory Committee.

Supervisor Hudgins represents the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on several regional and state organizations. She is a member of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission. She is a member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Transportation Planning Board and Human Services Policy Committee. She is a Commissioner on the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and chairs its Human and Community Services Committee, a member of the Route 28 Highway Transportation Improvement District Commission, Community and Criminal Justice Board, and Secretary of the Area Health Education Center. Supervisor Hudgins is a member of the Virginia Association of Counties Board of Directors and was appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to the State Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Substance Abuse Service Advisory Board. She was appointed by Chief Justice Leroy Hassell of the Virginia Supreme Court to serve on the Commonwealth Commission on Mental Health Law Reform.

Community Service:

In 1984 and 1988, she was elected to represent Virginia as National Committeewoman on the Democratic National Committee, and in 1988 served as the first woman to chair a Virginia Delegation to the Democratic National Convention.

As an active civic leader, Hudgins has worked in numerous community organizations. She is a member of the Reston/Dulles Section of the National Council of Negro Women where she served as president from 1995 until June 1999. Previously, she was a member and treasurer of the Northern Virginia Family Services Board, a member of the Fairfax County Tenant Landlord Commission, co-president, Legislative Committee Chair and Educational Advisory Chair of the Forest Edge Elementary School PTA, children’s liturgy planner and lector of St. Thomas a’ Becket Church, and founder and Scholarship Committee chair of Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Professional Experience:

Prior to her election to the Board, Supervisor Hudgins was the chief aide to former Chairman of the Board, Kate Hanley, for whom she worked from 1995 to 1999.

Before joining Chairman Hanley's staff, Supervisor Hudgins served from 1993-1994 as Secretary of the Fairfax County Electoral Board. Previously, she was employed as a teacher and in the computer and telecommunication industries. Her most recent private sector employment included twelve years of service with AT&T as a programmer, analyst and consultant.George Mason Univ. seal

Personal:

Supervisor Hudgins was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She is a 35-year resident of Reston, Virginia. She is married to Willie L. Hudgins, Jr. and they have two adult sons.
